Provinces and Territories of Canada[]
Provinces of Canada[]
During the 1950s Canada gained de facto control of virtually all of Britain's territories in the Americas, which were administered as territories. Most of these territories elected to become independent, and this was granted one territory at a time, with the last territory (Saint Kitts and Nevis) gaining independence in 1983. Canada has an "Association" with the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Virgin Islands. These territories are basically independent, but Canada handles their foreign and defence affairs. The Canadian Forces are permanently deployed to some parts of the Caribbean.
